hiking Through Time and Europe's Highest Mountains in Svaneti, Georgia

Svaneti, hidden in the heart of the majestic Caucasus, offers a unique hiking experience that effortlessly combines nature and culture. This trail takes you along Europe’s highest peaks and deep-cut valleys, surrounded by wildflowers, thundering waterfalls, and forests that seem straight out of a fairy tale. A highlight for nature lovers? A visit to the picturesque Koruldi Lakes, where the crystal-clear waters reflect the surrounding mountain peaks in serene tranquility.

Along the way, you will walk through ancient villages like Adishi, known for its medieval stone towers, and Tsvirmi, where traditional Svan hospitality is central. The absolute highlight is Ushguli, the highest continuously inhabited village in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, at an altitude of 2,200 meters, you feel time stand still as you walk among the iconic Svan towers that have watched over the valley for centuries.

Our guide, a born and bred local of Svaneti, adds an extra dimension to this experience. During the hike, she shares stories, myths, and legends about the area—from ancient kings to hidden mountain spirits. Her deep connection to the region gives each step additional meaning.

Besides cultural richness, this trail also offers physical challenges. You will climb the Lagem Pass at 3,000 meters, admire the mighty Mt. Ushba at 4,790 meters, and gaze up at Georgia’s highest peak, Mt. Shkhara, at 5,203 meters. But not every night brings you back to the comfort of a guesthouse. On some evenings, you will sleep under the stars, surrounded by silence and the grandeur of nature.

And before the journey ends, we take you to Tskaltubo, a former Soviet spa resort known for its medicinal waters and faded grandeur. Walk through the abandoned bathhouses and experience how time seems to stand still—a surreal but fascinating contrast to pristine Svaneti.

This hike promises an unforgettable experience for lovers of rugged nature and authentic mountain villages.

Ready? Set. Svaneti!
